Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of National Poetry Month

This April marks the 20th anniversary of National Poetry Month, and to celebrate KidLit TV has joined up with the RhyPiBoMo team for the 3rd Annual Rhyming Picture Book Month. To honor the rhyming picture books that bring the joy of poetry and rhyme into every child’s life, we created a parody of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” and Jimmy Fallon’s Classroom Instrument Performances with RhyPiBoMo’s founder Angie Karcher. KidLit TV’s founder Julie Gribble directed the music video starring team members Katya SzewczukLaurel Nakai and our kid lit reviewer Rosie Ciuba!

So get ready to “Shake It Off” as we celebrate National Poetry Month!

Parody Lyrics to SHAKE IT OFF
by Angie Karcher

I stay up too late, got rhymin’ on my brain
Ya know what people say (Do I?), Ya know what people say (What do they say?)

I shouldn’t write in rhyme! (Wait, what?) I shouldn’t write in rhyme! (What?)
At least that’s what people say (mmm), that’s what people say (mmm)

But I keep rhymin’ can’t stop, won’t stop rhymin’
It‘s like I got this music in my body and it‘s gonna be alright

‘Cause the rhymers gonna rhyme, rhyme, rhyme, rhyme, rhyme.
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate

Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake

I shake it off, I shake it off

Non-rhymers gonna smirk, smirk, smirk, smirk, smirk
‘Cause they don’t get the way we work, work, work, work. work

Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off

I’ll never miss a beat, meter’s rockin’ many feet
And that’s what they don’t see (mmm), that’s what they don’t see (mmm)
I’m rhymin’ on my own (rhymin’ on my own), I’ll make the rhymes up as I go (rhymes up as I go)

And that’s what they don’t know (mmm), that’s what they don’t know (mmm)

But I keep rhymin’ can’t stop, won’t stop chiming
It‘s like I got this music in my body saying it‘s gonna be alright

Cause the rhymers gonna rhyme, rhyme, rhyme, rhyme, rhyme.
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate

Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake

I shake it off, I shake it off

Non-rhymers gonna smirk, smirk, smirk, smirk, smirk

‘Cause they don’t get the way we work, work, work, work. work

I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I shake it off, I shake it off

Hey, hey, hey, just think while you’ve been writin’ in prose and all the wordy wordy stories people know
you could have been writing rhyme to this sick beat

My new man-uscript is written in rhyme. They’re like “oh my God”, but I’m just gonnashake it

And to the fella rhyme geek with the hella technique
Won’t you come on over, baby, we can shake, shake, shake

‘Cause the rhymers gonna rhyme, rhyme, rhyme, rhyme, rhyme.
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate

Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake I shake it off, I shake it off

Non-rhymers gonna smirk, smirk, smirk, smirk, smirk

‘Cause they don’t get the way we work, work, work, work. work

I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I shake it off, I shake it off

Write in rhyme!

Once the lyrics were together the KidLit TV team got to work on the filming and song recording. Team member Katya — who made the music video for Tara Lazar’s PiBoIdMo — shows off her quirky dance moves and parody skills. Author and songwriter Laurel Nakai was a wiz at rebuilding the entire “Shake It Off” song from scratch with her technical software that you can find professional music producers using today.

Rhyming and exercise = a great mix! Thanks so much, Vivian! Laurel worked hard on rebuilding the entire song! It was magical seeing how she put it all together. And now you all know about my dark secret: I can’t dance!

We love having authors come on Read Out Loud to read their books. It’s great fun!

hahaha! This is so true! How many times have authors been told not to write in rhyme? Love how you spun it into a parody :)
