The Kids Are All Write: How to Write a Dot Day Poem
By Jamie Nanfara
International Dot Day is a celebration of creativity inspired by the award-winning book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. If you haven’t had a chance to create a dot yet, then get to it! This month we will be writing poems to go along with Dot Day artwork!
Writing a Dot Day poem is easy! Here are two ways to get started:
LOOK INSIDE YOUR DOT
Take a good look at your artwork. What is inside the dot? Is it filled with magic? Or dreams? Or macaroni and cheese? Use our poem format below to write about what’s inside your dot.
Line 1: This dot is filled with (noun)
Line 2: (Give a description of the noun)
Line 3: (Three -ing words that describe the noun)
Line 4: (Repeat the noun in line 1)
this dot is filled with magic
fairies and witches casting spells
mixing, brewing, chanting
PICK A COLOR
Does a certain color pop out of your artwork? What does this color remind you of? Does it taste or smell like anything? How does it feel on your hands? Make a list of your thoughts! Then, choose the ones you like best to make your color poem!
Blue is the taste of blue raspberry ice pops on a hot summer day
and the sound of ocean waves crashing against the shore
Blue is the feeling of my little brother’s soft baby blanket
and the smell of fresh baked blueberry muffins
We’d love to hear your Dot Day poems! Share them in the comments below!
